Copper Canyon

IN THE HEART OF THE COPPER CANYON

The Copper Canyon encompasses an immense territory of 60,000 square kilometers of pine-oak forest, ravines and gorges of volcanic origin containing countless canyons – 7 of them – deeper than the Grand Canyon of Colorado in the United States. Until a few years ago, this land was inhabited only by natives, of which the Raramuri are the best known, fortunately, there are still three other indigenous groups, the Tepehuanos, Vorohios and Pimas.

Until very recently, only the Chihuahua to the Pacific Railroad, inaugurated in 1961, was the only means of communication; the roads were very scarce and dirt roads to the oldest mining towns, as is the case of Batopilas, there were only bridle paths, and today, boasts one of the most impressive scenic roads not only in Mexico, but in the world, which descends from 2,300 to less than 500 meters above sea level, in a distance of just 15 kilometers.

Batopilas… a journey into the past

As if lost in the depths of the Sierra Madre, the town of Batopilas is the jewel of the Barrancas, its subtropical climate and its recently won award of being recognized as a Pueblo Magico, do it the honor of having had in 1880 the richest silver mine in the world. National Geographic opined, “Imagine Tahiti, a Treasure Island hidden in the depths of the Grand Canyon.”

TOURIST OR TRAVELER?

Copper Canyon offers something for everyone. The Barrancas del Cobre area has that special something for every taste; the accessible Creel / Divisadero for the brand new Barrancas del Cobre Adventure Park, and the remote and peaceful for experienced travelers who want to get away from the popular, located in the depths of the Barranca de Batopilas. For those who enjoy the Cable Car, zip lines and other attractions of the Adventure Park, we highly recommend the hotel Mansión Tarahumara, which has rooms with the best views of the Copper Canyon. But if you are looking for peace and tranquility, as well as the opportunity to immerse yourself in the depths of one of the most spectacular natural settings in the world, the Batopilas area and the river that gives life to the vegetation at the bottom of the canyon will give you the experience of a lifetime. Here we have two exquisite hotels where we offer world-class luxury and comfort.

HOW TO GET THERE?

“One of the 10 most spectacular roads in the world.”

The broken geography required a marvel of modern engineering to achieve the layout of this new road that touches the ecosystems of the plains of the cattle ranches, ascends to the top with pine-oak forest and descends to the level of the river to meet with a subtropical climate and vegetation. Because of the remoteness of this Magical Town, and the great amount of things to do, we recommend that you schedule a minimum of two nights and three days, because,

“The journey alone, makes it worth the trip.”

Legend has it that almost every day, a solitary eagle was seen flying over the high peaks, always heading towards the cliffs of the great canyon; once on the shore, it would fold its wings to plunge at dizzying speed in free fall, as it approached the river, it would open its wings and soar again, just enough to glide just above the cliffs, then, it would continue down the river, until it reached Batopilas. No one had any idea why the eagle made this trip every day, he was never seen fishing, people deduced that he did it just for his own amusement. This route is known as the eagle’s path.
